Taka Sushi in Westbury serves up a straightforward, authentic Japanese sushi experience that feels thoughtfully rooted in tradition rather than trend. Located on a quiet stretch of Carman Avenue, the restaurant’s subtle, warm lighting evokes a calm, izakaya-like vibe in the evenings — a relaxed space that suits both casual dinners and intimate date nights.

The menu emphasizes freshness and precision, with selections that highlight high-quality fish like Yellowtail Belly, Fatty Tuna, and Arctic Char Nigiri alongside classic rolls such as the Special Dragon Roll and Shrimp Tempura Roll. The sushi rice consistently strikes a balance: firm enough to hold shape without feeling overcompressed, which speaks to the care in preparation. Those who appreciate minimalistic, clean flavors will find the absence of heavy sauces refreshing, allowing the natural quality of the fish to stand out.

Service here tends to be attentive without hovering, giving the place a welcoming yet unobtrusive feel. Locals looking for a dependable, well-executed sushi meal — whether a solo lunch with a Chirashi Bowl or a leisurely evening sharing sashimi platters — will find Taka Sushi an inviting choice. The shop’s reputation for consistency often draws patrons from neighboring areas, including those willing to drive a bit farther for the quality and atmosphere it offers.

Best times to visit are early evening or quieter weekday nights when the ambiance feels most intimate and the pace allows for relaxed appreciation of each bite. Whether you're winding down after work or marking a small celebration, Taka Sushi’s focus on traditional techniques and fresh ingredients makes it a spot where those familiar with Japanese dining will feel at home.

Taka in Westbury, New York, is a neighborhood sushi bar that delivers a genuinely authentic experience. The fish is consistently fresh and flavorful, while the rice used for the nigiri is perfectly balanced—firm without being over-pressed. It’s hands down the best sushi spot in the area. The atmosphere outside is quiet, with subtle evening lighting that evokes the feel of an izakaya in Ueno. Inside, the space is small, cozy, and distinctly Japanese, offering a warm and intimate dining experience. The only downside is that the shrimp nigiri is made with cooked shrimp, while I would prefer botan ebi instead.

This is hands down the best sushi restaurant I've everrr been to!!!! The fish is incredibly fresh and the service is outstandingggg!! Everyone’s so friendly, fast, and attentive without being overbearing. Taka, the owner, is one of the kindest people you’ll meet and takes great pride in what he does. If you’re looking for top-tier sushi and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, this is DEFINITELYyyy the place:))

This authentic, Japanese-owned restaurant focuses on traditional technique, perfectly seasoned rice, and beautifully cut fish that speaks for itself. No heavy sauces, no gimmicks — just high-quality sushi made with care and pride. A must for anyone who appreciates real Japanese sushi on LI!

We love going to Taka Sushi! The food is worth the 1 1/2 hour drive for us. Everything is high quality and great service and atmosphere. We highly recommend it. The price is a little more on the higher end. Save your Pennie’s, because it is worth it!

Taka Sushi was recommended by my roommate’s sister and it’s a hidden gem with humble decor in Westbury. My daughter’s Chicken Tatsutaage and she loved it so much since it’s juicy with crispy layer. We highly recommend their Chirashi bowl which was served fresh with good portion and reasonable price. Our favorite was the grilled eel, flavorful and appetizing.

This was our first time visiting. The restaurant is small and easy to miss from the outside, but there’s so much going on once you’re inside. The chef’s nigiri was beautifully crafted, both visually and in flavor. We skipped appetizers because we were starving and ordered a variety of sushi instead. The salmon skin roll was especially memorable, it was my first time trying it and it was incredibly fragrant and satisfying. After having a lot of raw sushi, getting a warm roll in between was really comforting. Do not skip the soymilk flan. It’s homemade, and has a rich, deep soybean flavor that really stands out. For two people, the total came to $240, which honestly felt like a great value for the quality.

We came here from 65~ miles away for a field trip in order to experience the most traditional authentic sushi and other Japanese cuisine. What a feast! Taka-san and his team welcomed us as we were their house guests and gave us samples of all different kinds of sushi, as he was informing us about each fish. He was also very nice to share some of his reserve sake collection. If you want REAL sushi, this is the only place to go on Long Island! Period. Arigatou Taka-San!
